As a group we came up with the synopsis for our thriller. We made sure that the opening scenes gave enough information to keep the audience hooked however leaving a lot of room to work with an in depth plot (e.g not killing the suspected killer at the beginning, giving room for a twist such as he ends up not being the killer its the protagonist (Jak Hunter) who actually did the crime but it made him go insane).
Our thriller would be a crime based thriller; this is implied from the opening of the thriller. The opening of the thriller engages the audience as it raises lots of questions. This is shown by the weapons that are displayed in the shed and the BBC News report on the computer. There are also many little hints within the opening such as: newspaper reports and photos of men. One of these men is shown in the opening and it ends with him getting knocked out. This is purposely done to create a dramatic effect within the audience as it raises questions. Within the audience there are many questions that are unanswered in the opening; this encourages the viewers to carry on watching as they are intrigued to find out the unanswered questions.
Our opening leaves us with a few possible events that can occur throughout the rest of the film. However, the film would be following a man who is seeking revenge for an event that happened in the past (this is hinted by the BBC News article in the opening). Also with the victim getting knocked out instead of being shot allows us to develop the storyline as there are many possibilities that can be created within this character.
In context, our film is similar to the John Wick films, as the protagonist is followed throughout the film and is seeking revenge because of things that happened in the past. However, one of the most important aspects of a thriller is plot twists, during the film there are many possibilities to create a plot twist. For example, there may be a confusion of who committed the crime and at the end it is revealed that the character seeking revenge was the killer all along and his mental illness subverted him to think that it wasn’t him.
Our thriller would be on the borderline of a 15. This is an ideal rating for a thriller film as it appeals to a larger audience rather than the audience being limited because of the nature of the film. In a 15 there can be moderate violence, sex and drug use, however it must not be conflicted heavily throughout the film.
